But what is pickleball, and where did it come from? The story of pickleball is as engaging as the game itself. It all started in the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, when three fathers—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—were looking for a way to entertain their families. With limited equipment, they improvised using a badminton net, a perforated plastic ball, and wooden paddles. The result was a game that combined elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, played on a smaller court, making it accessible to all ages.
Legend has it that the name "pickleball" came from the Pritchard family's dog, Pickles, who loved chasing the ball during games. Others say the name refers to the "pickle boat" in rowing, a term for a crew made up of leftover rowers. Regardless of its origin, pickleball quickly gained popularity and evolved into a sport enjoyed by millions around the world.
